Substance Abuse and Addiction

Drug addiction, medically referred to as substance use disorder, is classified as a disease. It affects thought processes and behavior, leading to an inability to control the use of the substance. This can occur with prescription medications, alcohol, and other illicit drugs. Once a person has become addicted, they may keep using these substances, despite serious consequences.

Substance abuse disorders often begin with seemingly harmless experimentation with recreational drugs in social situations. This social use can become more frequent and possibly lead to daily use. Another common occurrence is addiction that stems from a legitimate need for a prescription medication. This is especially true with prescription opiates and certain anxiety medications.

There are numerous factors that may fact affect how quickly someone becomes addicted to a substance. Opiates, for example, are extremely physically addictive. Even short-term use can lead to uncomfortable withdrawal systems. Stimulants, like cocaine or methamphetamine, are more psychologically addictive. Users experience a brief euphoria followed by a strong mental desire to attain that same high.

There is also reason to believe that a person genetics and family history can also play a part in their propensity to become an addict. Many people seeking treatment for substance abuse report a history of alcoholism and/or drug in their family.

Recovering is no easy task. Help from medical professionals, therapists, family, friends, and support groups are all part of any successful attempt at treatment.
